An innovative meeting and learning space was created for the Mittelhaan elementary school that combines education, sustainability and experiencing nature. As part of the REACT-EU funding measure “Green Infrastructure”, the project was implemented by the city of Haan. The aim was to upgrade the schoolyard through sustainable measures such as shade-providing greenery and multifunctional recreational areas in a climate-friendly and ecological way.
The centerpiece of the project is the new gardening area in the area of a local tree that is around 80 years old. The sensitive root zone is protected with the help of a floating tree deck made of steel mesh, while the platform is used as a place to learn and spend time. Accessible without barriers, it is a playful invitation to actively experience and help shape the green surroundings.
The modular PENTA planting beds in combination with the AKIRA stool bench were used for this purpose. The PENTA system is characterized by its versatile combinability: Five modules can be arranged Tetris-like to form a three-dimensional landscape, the colors and heights of which can be flexibly designed. This creates a lively environment that encourages children to enjoy gardening and introduces them to ecological topics in a playful way.
The modules made of robust stainless steel are easy to maintain, weatherproof and can be optionally equipped with an irrigation system. In combination with the AKIRA stool bench, the newly designed area not only invites you to plant, but also to linger and study.
