The landscape architecture firm Mettler developed a comprehensive concept for the redesign of Karlsruhe's city center that connects the inner-city spaces and creates a coherent city center. The redesigned Berliner Platz has been transformed into a modern urban space with representative appeal as part of the inner-city development plan
The KARL round benches, which now form the center of the new square, were created in close cooperation with the responsible planners. The impressive round benches made of high-quality materials invite visitors and residents to linger and create a communicative space with a high quality of stay.
Symmetrical, recurring shapes and the interplay of dynamic curves and clear contours give the benches character. The robust steel base construction ensures a high level of stability in daily use, while still retaining a certain lightness thanks to the delicate, inwardly offset legs. The detailed wooden slats with concealed screws emphasize the quality of the material and, in combination with the backrest and armrests, create a high level of seating comfort for all age groups
At the same time, the modern design language of the round benches is also incorporated into other design elements such as the flooring, the lighting and the precise placement of the trees, creating an atmospheric overall picture of the new square.
